Russian Losses & Advance
Russian military losses and territorial advance data compiled from the most rigorous publicly available sources. Personnel KIA figures use Mediazona/BBC News confirmed-by-name methodology — the gold standard for Russian casualty data, cross-checked against Russia's National Probate Registry. Equipment losses use Oryx photo-confirmed figures supplemented by DIA and CSIS estimates. All figures represent floors, not ceilings.
Key findings
200,000+ confirmed Russian KIA
Mediazona/BBC News has confirmed over 200,186 Russian soldiers killed by name — using obituaries, social media, and official sources cross-referenced against the National Probate Registry. Statistical modelling by Meduza/Mediazona suggests actual total deaths are 3–5× higher. These figures make the Russia-Ukraine war the deadliest conflict in Europe since the Second World War.
Territorial advance compressing
Russian net monthly territorial advance fell from a peak of 750 km² in November 2024 to 25 km² in March 2026, with February 2026 recording a net Russian loss of 37 km² — the first month of negative advance in the dataset. The compression correlates with the scaling of Ukrainian FPV operations and USF institutional development.
Air defence attrition accelerating
Verified Ukrainian strikes on Russian air defence infrastructure have destroyed or damaged hundreds of SAM launchers, radars, and command systems since 2022. Progressive degradation of Russia's layered air defence has enabled Ukrainian long-range drone operations to penetrate deeper into Russian territory at higher success rates.
